Pittsburgh Learning Commons aims to support a wide-range of programs for learners of all ages, 8-80, in gaining skills and knowledge across science, technology, arts, and civics.

We will be running regular afterschool series in the spring and fall semesters. We are starting with a pilot program that will be foundational in shaping future learning opportunities, starting January 22nd, 2018.

Pilot Afterschool Series

Date(s): 1/23/2018 - 2/27/2018 Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3-5pm (drop off starts 2:30; optional dinner and games 5-6p) Location: Community Forge at the old Johnston Elementary School 1256 Franklin Avenue, Wilkinsburg, PA 15221 Cost: $100 (full and partial scholarships available) Age: 3rd-8th grade

In this pilot program, participants will build skills for consensus, planning, and leadership, participate in STEAM activities, and have access to homework help. We will be partnering with Queen’s Gambit, Barrels to Beethoven, and Wilkinsburg Youth Project to provide opportunities including computer activities, steelpan playing, science experiments, chess, and peer homework mentoring by highly-trained PLC staff.

At Pittsburgh Learning Commons, we support student-directed learning, so this initial group of students will be key in developing the nature of the afterschool space and future PLC programing. Participants should be prepared for open discussion of topics, participation in collaborative activities, trying new activities, and being part of a community of learners.

To apply to this program please fill out and return our enrollment application, general liability waiver, student interest form, and optional scholarship application. Forms can be obtained by emailing us at or at our building. Return forms via email or in-person at 1256 Franklin Ave., Wilkinsburg, PA 15221.

Chess Club

We are partnering with Queen’s Gambit to bring chess and board game strategy to our building Tuesdays and Thursdays 4-6pm, January 22nd - February 17th. All youth in our afterschool program will be able to participate, in addition to any other youth and adults who would like to join. Please email us at or come by during our meeting time to sign up.
